WHAT REAR AXLE DO I HAVE?
Here's an image to help identify the rear axle in your Jeep.
I GOT MORE LIFT THAN I ORDERED?
Our 3.5" rear leaf packs have lots of free arch and may give up to 4.5" of lift initially. Drive it for a while and it will settle after a 100 miles or so. Also, don't over torque your shackle bolts. You want the shackle and leaf pack to be able to move to provide flex.
HOW MUCH LIFT DO I HAVE?
Stock measurements for an XJ from center hub to fender flares are 17" front and rear.
WHICH WAY DOES THE CONTROL ARMS GO?
HOW DO I RECALIBRATE MY SPEEDOMETER WITH BIGGER TIRES?
This information is from an article at Off-Road.com. It's based on an NP231 Transfer Case. You can read the article at Off-Road.com for further details and installation instructions. We don't currently carry any Speedometer Gears. Instead, we recommend the Superlift TruSpeed Speed Signal Calibrator. If you'd rather just replace the gear, you'll need to go to a dealership.
**The Numbers in inches across the top represent your tire Diameter in Inches. The numbers down the left hand side represent your axle ratios gearing. The numbers in the table actually represent the tooth count of the gear that you are going to replace yours with.
DO I HAVE TO GET A SLIP YOKE ELIMINATOR (SYE) KIT WITH MY LIFT?
It seems everyone has a different experience with lifting their XJ and getting vibes. We recommend getting a SYE kit with lifts over 6". 3" kits are usually ok without them and our 4.5" kit works well with a t-case drop kit or our 1" Drop Heavy Duty Crossmember. Before lifting your vehicle make sure you know how to shim your axle to get your driveline at the correct angle. A good resource for understanding driveline geometry can be found at Tom Wood's Driveshaft. The ZJ Grand Cherokee may need the rear driveshaft lengthened on 5.5" kits but no SYE is needed. The front driveshaft on the ZJ is fine if it's a u-joint style. If it's the boot style you'll want to upgrade to u-joint style shaft.
WHICH WAY DO YOU INSTALL YOUR LOWER CONTROL ARMS?
On our lower control arms, the bend should be on the axle side.
HOW LONG SHOULD I SET MY ADJUSTABLE CONTROL ARMS?
As a starting point for a 3" XJ lift you'll want the uppers about 15 1/4" and the lowers at 16 1/4". You want to get the caster set to within factory specs. We recommend going to longer control arms for XJs and TJs over 3.5" of lift. The stock arms are too short for those applications.
CAN I CUSTOMIZE THE LIFT KITS YOU HAVE ON THE SITE?
All of our kits can be customized to meet your needs but you will have to call in 256-442-0607 so we can give you a modified price.
WHY DON'T YOU OFFER CONTROL ARM DROP BRACKETS?
We don't suggest drop brackets. The way they are being built by other companies they put a lot of stress on the frame and we've seen them do damage to the uni-frame. For the amount of those brackets and the cost of arms you can buy the long-arm upgrade we offer.
WHAT SIZE METAL AND TUBING DO YOU USE?
The tubing we use on our control arms, trac-bars and steering is .250 (1/4") thick DOM (Drawn Over Mandrel) tubing. Some of our competitors use seemed tubing, our DOM tubing is much stronger.DOM tubing has a higher tensile strength & uniform wall thickness. Our skids plates are made of 3/16" plate steel with the mounting points made with 1/4"-3/8" steel.
WHAT'S ARE THESE STEERING TERMS?
CASTER: Is the forward or rearward tilt of the axle. It provides steering stability, steering return ability, and cornering ease. The stock settings for a Cherokee are positive 5°-7° of caster. Too much can lead to death wobble and too little can cause a wandering feeling in the steering.
CAMBER: Is the inward or outward tilt of the wheel. It reduces stress on steering and suspension parts, minimizes road shock, helps stability, and maintains optimum tire life. On the Jeep Cherokee, camber can only be adjusted with adjustable ball joints.
TOE: Is the angle between the plane of rotation of the wheel in relationship to the vehicle centerline. Toe sets the rotation of the tire parallel with the motion of the vehicle. Improper toe can cause excessive tire wear and increased fuel consumption.
WHY USE RUBBER BUSHINGS?
We chose to use stock rubber bushings in our control arms and trac-bars for a few reasons. We feel these rubber bushings can flex as much as a johnny joint while costing far less to replace, if they have to be replaced at all.
WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS TORQUE SPECS?
Heim Joints for OTK steering = 90ft lbs.
WHEN DO I NEED EXTENDED BRAKELINES?
We recommend extended brakelines at 4.5" of lift or more. At 3" of lift your stock lines are marginal. Extended brackets will work with stock lines but we recommend getting the upgraded Stainless Steel Brakelines if possible.
WHY DO YOUR PARTS CHANGE NOW AND AGAIN?
Here at Rusty's were constantly striving to improve our products. We consistently test our products out on the trail (Trail Tested Tough) before ever putting them into production. We are always taking the feedback from our customers and trying to improve our work. Occasionally we will find a way to improve our designs. In those instances, our product design may change slightly, but obviously for the better.
I READ SOMETHING NEGATIVE ON A WEB FORUM, IS IT TRUE?
What we've found is that most of our customers are out there hitting the trails and abusing our parts which is good, that's what they're made for. We get emails all the time praising our parts and customer service and we love to hear that. However, there is that small percent that has something go wrong. It's bound to happen when you're out there hitting the trails hard. Then somebody at a keyboard, rather than calling us to work out a solution or replacement, types something negative. Our satisfied customers are out there wheeling so they don't often chime in, but somebody else who has a cousin's friend's neighbor heard that too so suddenly Rusty's is the worst company to deal with, or so they type. Give us a call, odds are you're going to talk to Rusty directly, try that at one of our competitors. We offer a lifetime guarantee on the parts we manufacture and do our best to keep everyone happy. Due to the custom specifications of many of our parts, it takes some time to build so if you order a part, it may take us a few days to get it built and shipped. It doesn't speed things up at all when someone places an order and wants a tracking number 20 minutes later or when we take the time to troubleshoot the reason a customer is having trouble with our competitor's parts. We process the orders at the end of the day and then send the invoices to shipping. They then have to gather the parts, or wait till the custom part is built, and then they can assign a tracking number. This whole process can take a few days which is clearly stated on our website. It's up to you to decide what you believe and what you don't. We've been in business for 20+ years so we must be doing something right. We stand behind our parts and do our best to serve the customers.
CREDIT CARDS: ONE ORDER, MULTIPLE CHARGES?
When using a debit card, please note that some financial institutions will withhold funds for the authorized purchase amount IN ADDITION TO charging the account when processing is complete. This may result in duplicate deductions from the account until the original authorized amount is released. To avoid possible account errors, please ensure that sufficient funds are available.
