Jeep XJ Cherokee Suspension Systems by Rusty’s Off-Road

If you want your XJ to ride right, steer straight, and hold up on the trail, the suspension needs to be built as a system. Rusty’s XJ Cherokee suspension kits are designed to correct geometry, improve control, and add capability without turning your build into a never-ending parts hunt.

Most of our complete XJ suspension systems include upgraded control arms and a heavy-duty track bar. That means you are getting the parts that actually matter for axle alignment and drivability, not just springs and a wish.

Below is a simple way to choose the right direction for your build. If you already have a lift and want to step into long arms, skip down to the Long Arm Upgrade section.

Complete XJ Suspension Systems

This is where most XJ owners land for the best mix of ride quality, tire clearance, and trail performance. These are complete suspension packages designed to work together, not pieced-together lift kits. Depending on the kit level you choose, complete systems commonly include matched front coils, rear leaf solutions, properly valved shocks, and the supporting components that keep the Jeep aligned and driving correctly.

Most complete systems include upgraded control arms and a heavy-duty track bar. That is the difference between an XJ that looks lifted and an XJ that actually drives well.

What you get with a complete system

  • Parts that are designed to work together as a package
  • Better axle alignment and steering feel
  • Improved ride quality on-road and control off-road
  • More reliable performance under real trail use

Long Travel Systems and Long Arm Conversions

When you’re building an XJ for harder trails, bigger obstacles, and real articulation, long arms change everything. Rusty’s long travel systems are complete long arm conversions built to correct geometry at higher lift heights and deliver smoother suspension movement with less binding.

These systems are built around heavy-duty crossmembers and unibody reinforcement, with fully adjustable long arms made from 2-inch DOM tubing. Most long travel systems are offered in multiple front suspension configurations including Radius Arm, 3-Link, 4-Link, and Competition 4-Link.

Rusty’s complete long travel systems include upgraded control arms and a heavy-duty track bar along with the supporting hardware needed for a suspension that works the way it should.

Long Travel options

  • Radius Arm: Strong, simple, and proven for trail rigs
  • 3-Link and 4-Link: Increased articulation and improved control
  • Competition 4-Link: Race-proven systems using 1.25-inch heim joints and reinforced brackets for higher-speed off-road use

Entry-Level Lift Options

If you’re keeping your XJ simple and just want a mild lift for better stance or basic tire clearance, budget boost and add-a-leaf systems are a solid starting point. These options are designed for affordability and easy installation.

Entry-level spacer, shackle, and add-a-leaf kits do not include track bars or upgraded control arms. They are intended as straightforward lift solutions for daily-driven XJs and light trail use.

Long Arm Upgrade Kits

Already running 4 inches of lift or more and want the benefits of long arms without replacing your entire suspension? Rusty’s long arm upgrade kits let you convert many short-arm setups into a high-clearance long arm system using your existing springs.

These upgrade kits focus on improved geometry and articulation by replacing factory short arms with long arms and the proper mounting structure.

Long arm upgrade kits do not include track bars. They are designed to integrate into an existing lift setup.

Jeep XJ Suspension FAQ

Do Rusty’s XJ kits include control arms and track bars?

Most of our complete suspension systems include upgraded control arms and a heavy-duty track bar. Entry-level spacer and add-a-leaf kits do not. Long arm upgrade kits are designed to work with an existing lift and do not include track bars.

What is the difference between a complete kit and an upgrade kit?

A complete suspension system is designed as a full package with matched components so the Jeep rides and drives correctly. An upgrade kit is intended to improve one part of an existing setup, like converting a short-arm lift to long arms, without replacing springs and every supporting component.

Are long arms worth it on an XJ?

Long arms can improve ride quality and articulation by reducing control arm angles and suspension binding. If you’re building for harder trails or higher lift heights, a long arm conversion is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make.

How do I choose the right system?

If you want a setup that drives well and performs on the trail, start with a complete suspension system. If you’re building for bigger obstacles and want maximum articulation, look at the long travel systems. If you already have a lift and want to improve geometry, long arm upgrades are the right path.
